I was never a big fan of grapefruit due to its bitterness. I don’t even remember the last time it’s ever been on my grocery list. Well…I recently discovered these over-sized grapefruits that have just right amount of tartness, very suitable for a summer salad.
They came in a box from Imperfect Produce, a weekly delivery of funny-looking fresh fruits and veggies. We are so used to perfectly stocked fruit and vegetable stands in supermarkets. I never thought of it, but “in America, 1 in 5 fruits and vegetables grown don’t fit grocery stores’ strict cosmetic standards”. Imperfect Produce source these products and deliver them all over San Francisco Bay Area. I’ve tried other CSA over the years and this is my favorite by far. You definitely get more bang for your buck. I also feel good about helping reduce food waste.
(Disclaimer: this is not a sponsored post, I genuinely like the service and recommend them to all my friends. )
(A little Lego Duplo figurine for the scale)
Actually this thick skinned grapefruit is perfect-sized to be tossed around like a ball, not that I encourage it in this house! But a little sensorial discovery is permitted. I always believe that little kids need to learn to appreciate food in their original form. Whenever we go to supermarket with kids, we try to stick to the whole food section. The dilemma is the kids seems always to be attracted to packaged food. It’s funny when my 5 years-old sitting in the shopping cart says “oh… that looks so good, but mama we are not going to buy it, right?” Whereas every year at the end of school, she always couldn’t wait to eat the granola bar that has been sitting in her earthquake kit for a year! Voila, I still need to find a way to teach them eat better with simpler food.
What about you? I’d love to know what you do to help your kids avoid processed food. Leave a comment below.
